What is the Freedom of Information Act 2000?

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 provides a right of access to any recorded information held by a public authority in the UK. Organisations are not required to provide opinions, hypothetical responses or to create new data in order to respond to a request.

Personal data cannot be provided by submitting a Freedom of Information request, and individuals should not make requests regarding their own details or records. You can find out how to make a SAR in the customer Subject Access Request guidance.

Anyone in the world can make a Freedom of Information request.

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 obliges authorities to publish their information proactively and improve records management practices. Under the Act public authorities and those providing services to them must also adopt and maintain a Publication Scheme.

To find out about DBS's Publication Scheme, please refer to the the Publication scheme GOV.UK page.

Additionally, DBS publish a summary of previous requests for information handled under the FOI Act, on the DBS Freedom of Information requests GOV.UK page.
